“You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone’s soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows that they might do because of it, because of your words. That is your role, your gift.”
~ Erin Morgenstern,
When I was young I loved to lay with my head in my grandmother’s lap, absorbing her classic scent of Chanel Number 5, listening eagerly as she animated the tales of Tom Sawyer or James Herriot. Her narrations created my deep love affair with books, where stories would connect and lead me into a world away from the troubled one I was growing up within.
I think my grandmother knew that by introducing me to books and reading she could help me escape a fractured family life she had no power to remove me from, even if that escape was only a short moment of reprieve while engrossed in a story. This attachment to the emotions of words and how they can permeate a reader’s life grew into fantasies of growing up to be a writer. Constant fervid scribbling in a well-worn Moleskine helped to ease a troubled childhood and an adolescence full of angst, but it took many years of wisdom and education to learn how to mold and shape those words into a meaningful and well-crafted story, a tale that connected emotionally with readers, opening up a direct river from my heart to theirs.
I also grew up with a very analytic side – and a love for gadgets, science fiction, and technology – which let me to an honours degree in computer science. I now sit at a strange professional crossroads, an X-Y intersect of concrete yet creative. I use my creativity and emotion to craft powerful, clear, and compelling stories, and my hi-tech skills to determine how to apply those stories to an overall digital strategy.
As my day job, I currently manage web strategy and digital content for The Ledcor Group of Companies, where I am responsible for all of Ledcor’s web assets and social media channels, from design decisions to development, to administration of web servers, content management systems, crisis management, and content strategy. This includes Ledcor’s library of subsidiary sites, SummitHelicopters.ca, FlySummitAir.com, LedcorHighways.com, MVFLProject.com, and VHFC.ca.
